INFORMATION LITERACY MODELS
Information
literacy models are structured frameworks that describe the steps, stages, or
processes individuals follow to identify an information need, search for
information, evaluate it, use it effectively, and apply it ethically.
These
models assist teachers, librarians, and policymakers in designing instruction,
curricula, and assessment tools that systematically build information
competencies and help to teach our children the information literacy skills.
There
are so many models but below is the Big6 model well explained:
The Big6 Model
·
It was developed by Eisenberg and
Berkowitz in 1992 (USA)
·
It is one of the popular models in the
world that caters for all ages of people
·
It actually demonstrates how people
navigates through the information-problem solving
·
It is a widely used framework for teaching
information literacy and problem-solving skills
·
Big6 model guides learners through a
structured process of finding information to solve information-based tasks
Stages of Big6 model:
1.
Task
Definition
Learners
identify the information problem and clearly define what information is needed
to complete the task.
2.
Information
Seeking strategies
Possible
information sources are identified, and the most appropriate sources are
selected (e.g. books, websites, experts).
3.
Location
and access
Learners
locate the chosen sources and access the specific information within them.
4.
Use
of Information
Relevant
information is read, viewed, or listened to, and useful content is extracted.
5.
Synthesis
Information
from different sources is organized and combined to create a final product such
as a report, presentation, or answer.
6.
Evaluation
Learners
judge both the quality of the final product and the effectiveness of the
information-seeking process.
